Both. The value becomes Uber Cash, which can be redeemed through the Uber app, the Uber Eats app and the Postmates app, in United States cities where those apps operate.

Can I pay for part of a trip with Uber Cash and the rest with my card?

Yes. Uber states that Uber Cash can be used in combination with any other payment method.

Once I add the credit, will Uber use it automatically?

Yes, Uber Cash is set as your default payment method once it is on the account. To pay another way, open the Payment section in the app and select the payment method before the service is provided. Uber may also require a secondary payment method on the account.

Can I use Uber Cash for a scheduled ride?

No. Uber excludes scheduled rides from Uber Cash, along with family profiles and university campus cards.

Giftcard was purchased and plugged into the Uber app in less than 5 minutes. Was super useful for a $100+ Uber ride out of NYC. *Uber still charged an "authorization charge" or something like that to my main credit card but it was credited back in a few days.
