Laszlo, 10,000 BTC, and 2 Papa John’s Pizzas: A recipe to make history

Laszlo Hanyecz is a living legend. Not many people walking the Earth have the opportunity to celebrate their own personal holiday every year. In 2010, Laszlo became the first person to ever actually spend Bitcoin in real life.

Before this fateful transaction, Bitcoin was just a cool computer science experiment. It didn’t actually have any real-world value, it was just a virtual collectible. No merchant or business at the time accepted cryptocurrency, as before Bitcoin, cryptocurrency didn’t exist.

Laszlo, and another fellow Bitcointalk.org forum member, Jercos, were the first ever participants in a real-life economic exchange using Bitcoin. This transaction changed Bitcoin from being a novel virtual collectible, to becoming an actual new kind of digital currency.

Laszlo had a craving for pizza, and posted an offer on Bitcointalk, of 10,000 Bitcoin, to anyone who would either bring him 2 large pizzas, or pay for 2 large pizzas and have them delivered.

Jercos accepted the offer, and purchased the pizzas from Papa John’s, and promptly had them delivered to Laszlo’s front door. The rest is history.

Within less than a year, Bitcoin dramatically rose in price and attained a value of $1 per Bitcoin. Since Laszlo paid 10,000 Bitcoin for his two pizzas, the rising value of Bitcoin made Laszlo’s pizzas rather pricey in retrospect.

The trend would only continue. As Bitcoin reached all-time highs of $20,000 USD per coin in December of 2017, Laszlo’s pizzas reached an eye-watering all-time high price tag of around $200,000,000.

Over the years, many people have lamented for Laszlo’s perceived loss, but fail to realize that a guy that had 10,000 Bitcoin to spend frivolously on pizza in 2010, is probably still doing ok financially, as he probably had a lot more Bitcoin than that. He was an early miner and network participant.

In Bitcoin’s early days, fellow Bitcoiners latched on to the symbolic nature of Laszlo’s first Bitcoin purchase, and the date became a holiday of sorts. Now, a decade later, Laszlo’s Pizza Day is celebrated every year, by Bitcoiners worldwide.

It’s truly become a global holiday, albeit, an unofficial one.

Happy Bitcoin Pizza Day everyone!
